CANNING CLASS OFFERED The Blount County Extension office will conduct a program on “home food preservation basics.” The program will be Tuesday, Aug. 7, from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. at the Frank Green Building auditorium. PRICE DONATION ACCOUNT A special account has been established at Home- Town Bank for LaShone and Misty Price of Snead, who lost their home to fire. Donations can be made at Home-Town banks in Snead, Oneonta, or Pinson. The account is listed as the LaShone and Misty Price account, or the Price donation account.

SUSAN MOORE HIGH SCHOOL registration day and schedule pick-up will be for all students in grades 7-12 on Thursday, Aug. 16, from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m. Students will be allowed to pick up their schedule and pay for lockers and parking. All new students are required to bring proof of residency, immunization record (blue slip), birth certificate, a copy of the student’s Social Security card, a copy of the student’s report card, and a copy of the withdrawal form from the previous school.

APPALACHIAN SCHOOL REGISTRATION Senior registration will be Monday, Aug. 6, from 8:30 a.m. until 10:30 a.m. Eleventh grade registration will be the same day from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., and 10th grade registration will be 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. On Tuesday, Aug. 7, ninth grade students will register from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. Eighth grade will register Wednesday, Aug. 8, from 9 a.m. until 11 a.m. and seventh grade from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. New student registration will be from 9 a.m until noon on Thursday, Aug. 9. Meet the teacher night for grades K-6 will be Thursday, Aug. 16, from 5 p.m. until 7 p.m. All students are required to bring current proof of residence (a current utility bill). New students must have an immunization record (blue slip), birth certificate, and a copy of the student’s Social Security card.

FALL SOCCER REGISTRATION Blount County Youth Soccer will hold registration for fall soccer on Saturdays through Aug. 11 at the Oneonta City Park Depot from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. each day. Fees for U5-U6 are $75 per child, and U8-U19 are $85 per child.

CASA RECRUITS TEAMS TO BUILD PLAYHOUSES Blount County CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates for Children) is recruiting teams from area businesses, organizations, and churches to build playhouses that will be auctioned off to benefit the program. STRAIGHT MOUNTAIN VOLUNTEER FIRE AND RESCUE is selling address signs to residents at a discounted price of $10 for a 4”-by-16” blue aluminum sign with reflective 3” address numbers. On sale through July, the signs help fire, rescue, and law enforcement easily find homes. PRIMP YOUR PIT (BULL) PROMOTION During the month of August, Alabama Spay/Neuter and PetSmart Charities are working together to reduce the pit bull shelter population. THE AMERICAN RED CROSS will be holding monthly blood drives throughout 2012. A blood drive will be held Tuesday, Aug. 7, at Walmart from 12:30 p.m. until 5:30 p.m., and Thursday, Aug. 23, from 1 p.m. until 6 p.m. at the Oneonta American Red Cross office. Blood levels are critically low right now and the need is expected to increase. All blood collected remains in Blount County, except for a portion that goes to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham.

SANDLIN REUNION The 78th annual Sandlin family reunion will be Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Fort Decatur Recreation Center Gymnasium at 610 Fourth St., Decatur.
