ONEONTA POLICE DEPARTMENT will conduct active shooter training tomorrow, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. at City Hall. The public is invited.

ONEONTA PUBLIC LIBRARY ‘Twas the Night Poetry Contest is for ages 7-11 and 12-18. Gift cards will be awarded to winners in each age bracket. There is a 100-word limit for ages 7-11 and 200-word limit for ages 12-18. Entries are due Dec. 15 and may be submitted at the library or at oplib@otelco.net. Winners will be announced Dec. 18.

Anime and Manga club for teens will meet tomorrow, Dec. 7, at 6 p.m. Japanese snacks will be served.

A Polar Express pajama party will be Friday and Saturday nights, Dec. 8 and 9, and Friday, Dec. 15, beginning at 6 p.m. Watch the movie and kids will get a special surprise. Space is limited.

Twisted Stitchers will meet on Monday, Dec. 11, at 10 a.m. All experience levels are welcome.

BLOUNTSVILLE CHRISTMAS PARADE will be Friday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. Floats will be judged and awards given. BLOUNTSVILLE HISTORICAL PARK Pictures with Santa will be Saturday, Dec. 9, from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m., near the fireplace and old-time Christmas tree.

Friday, Dec. 8, beginning at 9 a.m., Carolyn Vest will teach a Christmas table decorations class with supplies except your greenery supplied. The cost is $10 and you take your masterpiece home.

ONEONTA BAND DEPARTMENT presents the annual Christmas concert Sunday, Dec. 10, 2 p.m., in the high school auditorium. The beginner, middle school and high school bands will perform. Admission is free; donations are appreciated.

BLOUNT COUNTY DEMOCRATIC CLUB will meet in the auditorium of the Frank Green Building on ‘Alabama Day,’ Thursday, Dec. 14, at 6:30 p.m. Blount County Memorial Museum curator Amy Rhudy and Stanley Moss will present the program on the Alabama Bicentennial.

TOWN OF CLEVELAND will have the annual Christmas in the Park on Saturday, Dec. 16, beginning at 5 p.m., with a community choir presenting ‘Christmas is in His Presence.’ Refreshments will follow at 6 p.m., with carols performed by string instruments, and Santa will arrive at 6:30 p.m. for visits and photos (bring your camera).

PINE MOUNTAIN COMMUNITY CENTER has hickory smoked hams for sale for $50. The 20-pound hams are fully cooked and ready to serve. BLOUNT COUNTY LANDFILL / TRANSFER STATION has new hours: Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and Saturday, 7:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

AMARYLLIS GARDEN CLUB MITTEN TREE is up at the Oneonta Public Library. Needs are for mittens, gloves, caps, warm clothing items, books, small toys, and coloring books and crayons. The items will be distributed to the Blount County Children’s Center and Hope House by Dec. 20.

BLOUNT COUNTY MEMORIAL MUSEUM The museum is sponsoring a photography contest and is seeking photos of historical interest in Blount County. Photos should be 4×6 or 5×7 for ages 17 and up and should include the item, location, and date of the photo on the back. Supply photographer information on a separate sheet of paper. Deadline to submit a photo is Feb. 15, 2018. The photo could be on next year’s museum Christmas ornament.

The museum invites middle and high school students to submit an essay about a historical and/or cultural aspect of life in Blount County, e.g., hometown sports, farming, family heritage, bridges, caverns and caves.
