Travis Creek Energy Company of Trafford has applied to the Alabama Surface Mining Commission to extract coal, along with other minerals, at its Trafford Mine site.
The 200-acre mine is located mainly in the southwest quarter of section 11, township 14 south, range 2 west in Blount County. It lies east of Deans Ferry Road, beginning slightly over a quarter mile northwest of County Line, in the Longs Branch watershed. The tract includes an additional 40 acres described as the southwest quarter of the northwest quarter of section 11.
For 30 days between Aug. 26 and Sept. 25, the mining commission will accept written comments and objections concerning the proposed mining operation. The commission will also accept requests for a public hearing, which it refers to as “an informal conference,” relative to the request. Citizens interested in such a meeting can request that it be held in their community at a time convenient for a majority of those interested in addressing the commission.
Anyone having an interest that may be adversely affected by the proposed mining operation may submit written comments during the public review period. Comments should be sent to the Alabama Surface Mining Commission, 1811 Second Street, P.O.Box 2390, Jasper, AL 35501. Comments should reference the application number E-0049.
Copies of the application are available for public review at the mining commission office at the above address, at Oneonta Public Library, and at the Travis Creek Energy office, 5269 Deans Ferry Road, just over a quarter-mile north of the intersection of County Line Road and Deans Ferry Road. 22
