To keep up with rapid developments in the form of new and not-so-new construction, The Blount Countian will provide updates from time to time like the following. Two new projects and one that has previously been reported constitute this update. New
The steel structure beginning to take shape on Ala 75 south next to the Coin Laundry and near Auto Zone is going to be the new ABC (liquor) store, Oneonta city manager Ed Lowe confirmed this week. He said no official completion date has been announced, that it will depend significantly on the weather over the next three months or so, and that, although no target opening date has been set, it’s reasonable to anticipate it will occur during this summer.
The large, army-green warehouse-type metal building that recently appeared on the landscape behind Walmart – and that has generated considerable interest among onlookers – is the new location of Tortillas Sabinas, Lowe said.
Tortillas Sabinas is a company that produces tortillas, the soft flatbread that forms the basis of many Hispanic foods such as tacos, quesadillas, and burritos. The company started in Allgood in a small storefront in 2009, later built a larger building across from Busy Bee Service Station, and will soon move into the new, roughly 20,000 sq. ft. building behind Walmart. (Sabinas, for the information of readers as uninformed as this writer, is a city in the northeastern Mexico state of Coahuila. It’s across the Rio Grande from and about 75 miles south of Laredo, Texas.) Update
The former McCurry’s Furniture building and the former Alaco Pharmacy building are still in a holding pattern in terms of word on progress and/or further developments. Originally conceived (or at least energetically rumored) as a quality sit-down restaurant (McCurry’s) and a possible sports bar (Alaco), renovation work proceeded apace throughout the summer, coming to a standstill during the fall. Owner and developer Wayne Bennett told The Blount Countian this week that he will have a further update by the end of this month. He said further word awaits approval of some changes on the projects. We’ll follow up again later.
