86, Oneonta, died Wednesday, Dec. 21, 2011. Born on Oct. 28, 1925, Nannie Russell was daughter of the late Walter Haynes and Clara Johnson Haynes. She was known as Nannie Mae, Momma, Grannie, Auntie, Mae, Sister, Nancy, and Mother Russell.

She attended school in the Blount County School System until the eighth grade and later as an adult attended Jefferson State Junior College to obtain her high school equivalency diploma. She also received a degree as a certified chef. She worked at Little Joe’s Restaurant in Oneonta, where people came from afar just to taste her pies. She worked in the home of several families where she touched the lives of many children that she loved as her own. She served on the PTA and Children’s Center Board of Oneonta.

She was saved and sanctified at an early age at Oneonta Church of God in Christ. She loved her church and her church family. She was a licensed Evangelist Missionary, taught Sunday school, served on the Trustee Board, and was the Pastor’s Aid. She was the Mother of Oneonta Church of God in Christ. At the district level, she served on the Decatur District Hospitality and assisted on the state Hospitality Board.

She was united in Holy Matrimony to James “Jim” Anderson Russell on Feb. 4, 1945, in Calera. To this union eight children were born.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; daughter Gladys; sons Robert and Gary; sisters Mildren Penn Head, Hattie Lee Staton, Virginia Haynes, Catherine Lauderdale; brothers Wallace Haynes and Walter Haynes Jr.; grandson Adam Russell; and son-in-law Karl A. Nobles.

She leaves to cherish her memories sons James A. ( Jackie) Russell Jr., Carlton (Brenda) Russell Sr., and Michael Russell; daughters Jeanette Russell, Cynthia Russell, and Theresa Nobles; 15 grandchildren; 23 greatgrandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; sisters Jesserine Benson and Carolyn Anderson; brother Leroy Haynes; and sister-in-law Frances Haynes; those close to her heart Angie Dupree, Rob McCurry, Cam Bullock, Gail Buchannon, Icy, Frank, Eugene, and Mike Gordon. Best friends Emma Fowler and Myra Bonner; and a host of other relatives and friends.
