Blount County’s 12 municipalities will observe Aug. 23 as election day this year for mayors and town or city council members, with a runoff election scheduled for Oct. 4, where needed.
The last day to register to vote in municipal elections is Aug. 10 for those not already registered to vote in county, state, and federal elections administered by the county.
Qualifying dates for those wishing to run for office are July 5 through July 19, with qualifying handled by the clerk in each town.
Qualifying fees vary somewhat and have not been set for this year in all cases. Generally, they are in the $10 to $50 range for council positions, and $25 to $50 for mayor. Qualifying fees for municipal elected positions may not exceed $50.
Polling places for municipal elections are the same as those for county/state/federal elections, except for the town of Cleveland. The new polling place in Cleveland is the Cleveland Community Center in the Cleveland Park.
The Blount Countian will cover local elections in detail once candidates have qualified.
