Leland Rhudy, master of ceremonies, begins the observance for Memorial Day 2019 as Dalton Wester, seated left, and Alton Grigsby look on. Names of Blount County’s casualties from the seven wars fought by the United States since the Civil War were read aloud by leaders of the county’s veterans’ service organizations and others. The annual service is organized by Operation Grateful Heart of Blount County, assisted by retired veterans service officer Wester and Memorial Museum curator Amy Rhudy. Guest speaker this year was Blount County Sheriff and active Alabama National Guard SFC Mark Moon. A wreath was placed before the Blount County Veterans Memorial and the ceremony concluded with the playing of Taps.
