MARY SHIRLEY MCCAY LOWRY passed away Sept. 15, 2020, at TLC Nursing Center, Oneonta. “Momma Shirley,” as she was known by her family, was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother. She spent her entire life in the beautiful countryside of Blount County. She was known by many for her creative talents and gave freely of her talents to family, friends, and her community. Her artistic, delicious cakes and other sweet treats brought joy to many birthday parties, weddings, and anniversaries. She even made the cake for the City of Oneonta’s official Centennial Celebration. She also crocheted many colorful scarves and hats for everyone from babies to cancer patients. Shirley loved to talk to friends and family and spent many hours visiting the elderly and sick when she was still healthy. As for family, there was no one she loved more or was prouder of than her two sons, Tommy and Johnny. Her Southern cooking always made family dinners and holidays special, and no fish fry would be complete without her coleslaw and hush puppies. Her beauty, her style, and her talents will be greatly missed.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband Jack Lowry and her son Tommy Lowry. She is survived by her son Johnny Lowry; her daughter-in-law Terri Lowry (who was married to Tommy); her grandchildren Betsy Darnall (Tommy), Cindy Lowry (Keith Tassin), and T.J. Lowry (Kettia); her four great-grandchildren Erin Darnall, Gus Darnall, Sophia Lowry, and Jacob Lowry; and many beloved nieces, nephews, and cousins.
The family is grateful to the staff at TLC Nursing Center for the many years of care they gave to Shirley. There will be a celebration of life at a later date when we can all gather safely.
