Daniel Wesley Dorning, 28, was fatally shot by his grandmother, Sue Dorning, 66, of Joy Road, following an altercation at his campsite in a wooded area off Adams Road Wednesday evening.
The grandmother had gone to the campsite where Dorning had pitched a tent when the argument ensued. The younger Dorning, thought to have been mentally troubled, was said by authorities to have become violent and was shaking the elder woman and striking her when she shot him with a handgun. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Blount County Sheriff’s Department investigators took Sue Dorning’s statement and released her, pending referral of the case to the Blount County District Attorney ‘s office, where it may be remanded to the grand jury for charges or dismissal.
