Man gets 30 years for reckless murder

A Blount County man has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for reckless murder in connection to a car wreck in June 2014.

Circuit Judge Steven King sentenced Tyler Reynolds last week for the murder of Melissa Jeneane Gilbert, 20. He also received a concurrent 10-year sentence for leaving the scene of an accident with injuries without reporting.

Reynolds had been found guilty by a Blount County jury in April.

According to testimony from Alabama State Trooper Gary C. Daniel Jr., Reynolds was the driver of a vehicle that was traveling approximately 100 miles per hour when it left Airport Road, hit several trees and rolled over several times.

Phillip Pearson, who was also a passenger in the vehicle, testified that Reynolds refused to call 911 and left the crash scene before authorities arrived. Other witnesses testified that Reynolds went home, took a shower and went to bed without reporting the wreck.

Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey commended Daniel for his work on the case. “Trooper Daniel spent several hours investigating the scene and interviewing witnesses to reconstruct the events,” said Casey. “This conviction would not have been possible without the evidence obtained through his thorough investigation and attention to detail.”
