MALLIE ‘MICKEY’ HAWKINS, 94, Highland Lake, died July 26, 2016. She attended Antioch United Methodist Church, was director of Blount County Council on Alcohol, was a charter member of the Bessemer ALANON Group, and created the Camp Sumatanga ALANON Roundup in the early 1970s, which still continues today. She enjoyed painting, working in her vegetable and flower gardens, and playing cards. Parents George M. and Annie Orten Parker, husband James Raymond Hawkins, and 10 siblings predeceased her.
Surviving are daughters Neysa Lucas, Karen Murphy; grandchildren Jesse (Mekina) Lucas, Kristin (Dwight) Julbert, Cynthia (Cliff) Plummer, Sharon ( James) Vaughn, Neysa (MAJ Bobby, USM retired) Rhodes, James (Nicole) Hawkins, Toby Thompson, James (Kimberly) Nelson, Joey Crawford; great-grandchildren Yuri Lucas, Meighan Julbert, Madelaine Julbert, Alec Julbert , Aidan Julbert, Cynthia Roy, Amber Plummer, James Murphy, Jon Stephenson, Will Dunsmore, Jon (Ashley) Rhodes, Christopher Rhodes, Shawn (CLP Cassie Ellis, USMC) Rhodes, Victoria Phillips, Tristen Phillips, Tarran Phillips, Winston Thompson; great—great grandchildren Bianka Roy, Piper Roy, Catelyn Hawkins, James Hawkins, Corey Stephenson, Nikki Rhodes, Lola Phillips, Stella Phillips, Abry Phillips, Henry Phillips, Tekah Phillips, Tristah Hewlett; best friend of 65 years Doris Harbinson.
Rick Hutchinson officiated the 2 p.m. service held July 29 at Valley Chapel Funeral Home. Burial was at Antioch Cemetery with James Hawkins, Jonathan Rhodes, Jon Stevenson, Christopher Rhodes, Alex Tolbert, and Shawn Rhodes serving as pallbearers. The family suggests memorial donations to Camp Sumatanga, 3615 Sumatanga Road, Gallant, AL 35972.
