Ten fire departments brought their trucks and lit up the night sky during the Blount County Christmas Parade last week. Some 120 entries participated and the winner of the best float went to Appalachian High School FCCLA, followed by Spring Valley Beach, and Cross Halo Cowboy Church.
Some parade-goers wisely chose to remain out of the cold and in the Old Brick Church (inset) across from Ace Hardware on 2nd Ave. The City of Oneonta opened the church to the public for the first time since purchasing the property and beginning its remodel. City manager Ed Lowe says the project could take up to one year and will be completed by city workers. Already the floor, which was rotten and infested with termites, has been removed, a new cement floor has been poured, foundation and side walls have been stabilized, and plumbing and electrical have been replaced. The city is planning to use the building for community development.
