Lester Memorial United Methodist Church welcomes Harvey Beck as new senior pastor, following the recent retirement of former senior pastor Barry Hallman.
Beck is originally from Ivalee near Attalla and has served much of his 30-year ministry in Etowah County. His most recent church was Gadsden First United Methodist Church; his first posting was at Altoona First United Methodist where he served for six years in the 1990s. Other assignments include churches at Hokes Bluff and Crossville.
He is married to wife Lana, awaiting their 39th anniversary in August. He has two grown children: Dave and Audra (Wilkes) and two Wilkes grandchildren – Madeline, 11, and Favor, 1 1/2.
Both Harvey and Lana grew up in Ivalee and both attended Etowah High School, where they were high school sweethearts, Beck said.
Beck said he was a biomedical technician before being called to preach in 1988. He attended Asbury Theological Seminary, graduating in 1994.
Discovering he has sterling Blount County ties, Beck said when he told his mother of his posting to Oneonta, she told him he is the great- great-greatgrandson of George Powell, early settler and original surveyor of Blount County who in 1855 published the first and still extant historical and geological treatise on the county.
To the question, what are your fondest hopes for this assignment? he answered: “That we continue to win people to Christ.”
Beck said he is an avid fisherman and turkey hunter.
