Seven candidates are running for the Alabama Senate District 17 seat. Profiles of the first four, taken alphabetically, appeared in the March 5 edition of the paper: Joe Cochran of Pinson, Gayle Gear of Mt. Olive, Brett King of Locust Fork, and Jim Murphree of Oneonta. This week the remaining three appear: Adam Ritch of Bagley/Corner, Jim Roberts of Gardendale, and Shay Shelnutt of Trussville.
District 17 incorporates roughly the southern twothirds of Blount County. It also includes about a third of northern Jefferson County, and a small strip running northwest to southeast through St. Clair County, connecting to a small portion of northwestern Talladega County, also included in the district. There are 35 Senate districts in Alabama.
Next week the paper will feature candidates running for Senate District 9, occupying the northern third of Blount County, as well as Marshall County and parts of DeKalb and Madison counties. Two candidates are running for the seat: Clay Scofield, the incumbent, of Summit, and Wade D. Taylor, of Fyffe.
