Larry Esco is 2009 Caring Heart Award winner

This week, May 3-9, is National Be Kind to Animals Week . Each year during this week, the Blount County Animal Shelter Inc. (BCASI) recognizes a local resident to receive the annual Caring Heart Award. This year Larry Esco, above left, was recognized for his outstanding effort as kennel manager at the Animal Adoption Center of Blount County. The award is presented by BCASI president Richard Vogan. Vogan said Esco has worked tirelessly since 2005 to save animals that enter the Animal Adoption Center at the Blount County shelter.

In honor of this observance, BCASI suggests the following ways to show your appreciation for the animals around you:

•Report animal abuse or neglect. •Adopt your next pet from the animal shelter or other rescue group. •Volunteer your time to BCASI or other animal welfare group. •Spay/neuter your pets and encourage others to do the same. •Make sure your pet has a tag or microchip ID. •Drive cautiously through areas populated by wild animals. • Speak out to others about respecting and protecting animals.
