JIMMY EDWARD BYRD, 70, Oneonta, died Sept. 30, 2017, at the residence. A wonderful father and friend to all that knew him, he served with the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and received the National Defense Service Medal, the Purple Heart, the Marksman (Rifle) medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with three Bronze Stars, the Combat Infantryman Badge, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Air Medal. He was predeceased by father Herman Byrd, uncles Lossie Byrd and Eugene Byrd, and aunt Peggy Byrd.
Surviving are children Jimmy Ray (Crystal) Byrd, Michael Andrew Byrd, Carolyn Byrd (Danny) Moore; grandchildren Dalton Lynn (Holly) Gilliland, Derek Lee Gilliland, Christopher Ray Byrd, Jacob Andrew Byrd, Emily Grace Byrd; great-grandchild Waylon Hayes Gilliland; sister Patty (Bill) Curry.
Jeremy Thompson officiated the 11 a.m. service held Oct. 4 at Lemley Funeral Home Chapel with burial at Tidwell Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Dalton Gilliland, Derek Gilliland, Christopher Byrd, Danny Howard, Randy Bradford, and Terry Bellew. Honorary pallbearers were Jacob Byrd, Buddy Bowen, and Eddie Kent.
