Retired 1st Sgt. John E. Hand Jr., places a wreath on the Blount County Veterans Memorial in front of the courthouse after a Memorial Day ceremony on Saturday in remembrance of those Blount County lives that were lost for this nation’s freedom. The event featured speaker Chad Richmond, department adjutant Alabama Chapter of Disabled American Veterans (DAV), national executive committeeman of the 8th district, deputy vice chairman of the State Board of Veterans, treasurer of the DAV Board of Directors, and president of the State Commanders and Adjutant Association. Patriotic songs were performed by choir students, and Trevor Kramer and Breanna Smith, of J.B. Pennington High School, played Taps. During the ceremony, veterans read off each name from Blount County who had died defending our nation in World War I, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, and Operation Iraqi Freedom.
