‘In Dixieland I’ll take my stand…’

-words of beloved anthem

More than 60 celebrants gathered Monday morning on the courthouse lawn to commemorate Robert E. Lee’s birthday – Jan. 19, 1807. The observance featured the singing of ‘Dixie,’ led by Glenna Boyd Campbell; a 21-gun salute performed by an honor guard of volunteers of the Sons of Confederate Veterans; the pledge of allegiance to the United States, and salutes to the Alabama and Confederate flags; and visiting well-wishers from several surrounding counties. Guest speaker Jimmy Hill of Athens, editor of Alabama Confederate and Sons of Confederate Veterans officer, delivered a memorial on Lee, highlighting his seldom-celebrated post-Civil War career as a college president. This year marks the 17th annual observance of Lee’s birthday at the Blount County courthouse.
