Horton woman killed in mobile home fire

Dorris Jean Wilson, 59, was killed on the night of Dec. 29 in a fire at a mobile home in the Horton area, according to Blount County Coroner John Mark Vaughn. The cause of death was given as carbon monoxide poisoning from smoke inhalation.

Wilson’s husband, Kenneth Wilson, 39, attempted to get his wife out of the burning trailer. The couple were in a bedroom at the end of the trailer.

When Wilson opened the door to the hallway, flames and smoke prevented exiting the room by that route. By the time Wilson broke a window and got out, his wife had been overcome and was unable to assist in her own escape. Wilson suffered cuts and burns.

Firefighters were called to the home at 119 Bright Star Road, but the fire was well-involved by the time they arrived minutes later, Vaughn said. Cause of the fire is under investigation by the state fire marshall’s office.
