Hometown Market, serving the Oneonta area for 19 years, will close for good on Oct. 26, according to store manager Larry Malin. He said the corporate office is not renewing the lease on the building because of increased competition in the retail food market, with nearly 30 Dollar General stores selling grocery items within Blount County. “With Walmart having half of the total market for groceries, the rest of the pie is just not big enough to split that many ways,” he said. Malin said the majority of the store’s 35 employees will relocate to Priceless IGA in the McDaniel Shopping Center on Ala 75, where he will be the store manager.
“I’d just like to say I appreciate the loyal customers and the many years worth of their business here since we opened in 2000,” Malin said. “And we’re going to appreciate their coming to IGA. We’re expanding the store down there to welcome them,” he added.
