HELEN R. CASEY, 85 years of age and a resident of Lakeland, Fla., passed away July 16, 2021, at Lakeland Regional Health.
She was born June 22, 1936, in Fall City, Ala., which is now submerged beneath Smith Lake. Helen’s childhood and young adult years were spent at the top of Straight Mountain, outside of Oneonta, where her family established a farm-to-market tomato and vegetable packing house and general grocery mercantile store. Huntsville served as her home until moving after retirement to be closer to her son and grandchildren in Brandon and Lakeland. Lakeland had been her home for the last four years.
She was an educator for more than 30 years, teaching high school mathematics in Sylacauga, Fort Payne, Alexandria, and Huntsville city schools. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science from Vanderbilt Peabody College and a Master of Psychology from Jacksonville State University.
Survivors include her son Brian Casey and wife Kay; her grandchildren Tiffany Sage (Jason), Jessica Casey, Caitlin Miller (Devon); and her great-grandson August Miller, and great-granddaughters Ella Miller and Felicity Sage; niece Janet Lake (Donald) and nephew Darrel Beard (Penney).
She was preceded in death by her parents Mattie Walker and Ulus Tolbert; her sister Nila Jean Beard; her former husbands Jackie Casey (father of her son Brian) and Arthur Scharein.
Friends may visit today, July 28, from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11 a.m. at Lemley Funeral Home. Burial will follow at Antioch United Methodist Cemetery, 3928 County Highway 20, Oneonta.
