Hayden falls at Lawrence County

The Hayden Wildcats didn’t go down without a fight in a 28-14 setback at Lawrence County last Friday night.

Lawrence County built a 14-0 lead before the Wildcats got on the board.

Colton Shirley fielded the kickoff at his own 17 and took it back 83 yards for a touchdown with 2:04 left in the first quarter. The extra point was missed but the Red Devil lead was just 14-6.

Hayden’s Jordyn Witt recovered a Lawrence County fumble on the ensuing possession but the home team’s defense came up with a stop and the score was still 14-6 at the half.

Lawrence County built the lead to 28-16 with touchdown runs of 28 and 26 yards but the Wildcats wouldn’t go away.

Hayden ran a reverse on the kickoff return and Adam Payne brought the ball back to the Lawrence County 26.

Tim Curry finished the drive with a 10- yard strike to Shirley and Joel Ciriello’s run on the 2-point conversion made it 28-14 with less than five minutes to play.

Ciriello led the Wildcats with 132 yards on 23 carries. Shirley had 28 yards on nine carries to go with 33 yards and a touchdown on four catches.

Penalties definitely didn’t favor the Wildcats as the visitors were flagged 12 times for 75 yards in losses while Lawrence County was penalized three time for 25 yards.

Hayden (0-5, 0-3 in 5A Region 6) hosts Lincoln (3-2, 3-0) this week.
