Hayden clobbers Curry



The Hayden Wildcats broke open a close game by scoring 28 unanswered points in the second half for a convincing 43-11 victory at Curry last Friday night.

Hayden got off to a good start as Aaron Witt caught a 5-yard touchdown pass from Corey Ward to give the Wildcats a 7-0 lead with 8:54 left in the first quarter.

Curry answered just 20 seconds later when Aaron White scored on a 66-yard run. The two-point conversion put the Yellow Jackets on top 8-7.

Hayden took the lead for good early in the second quarter when Issac Veitch scored on a 1-yard run. Ward hit Veitch for the two-point conversion to give the Wildcats a 15-8 lead.

Curry drew within four at 15-11 on the final play of the first half when Chay Pruitt knocked home a 28-yard field goal.

The second half was all Hayden. The Wildcats got a 1-yard touchdown run from Veitch, followed by a two-point run by Adam Roberts to take a 23-11 lead midway through the third quarter.

Zacary Henderson scored on a 9-yard run on the final play of the third quarter and Seth Gardner’s kick put the visitors up 30-11 after three quarters.

In the final quarter, Adam Carlton scored on a 1-yard run and Brandon Butts found Holton Chester from 11 yards out for the final score.

Veitch led the Wildcats with 222 yards and a pair of touchdowns on 28 carries. Ward completed 11 of 22 passes for 94 yards and a touchdown.

Whitt and Veitch each caught three passes.

The Hayden defense gave up 202 rushing yards and 100 passing yards but also came up with seven turnovers – five interceptions and two fumbles.

Ethan Hayes led the Wildcats with nine tackles while Rodney Dixon had two sacks along with six tackles.

Bradley Lovejoy, Johnny Spence, Jared Hargett, Zacary Henderson, and Brandon Butts had interceptions while Lovejoy and Nathan Turley added fumble recoveries.

Hayden (2-2) will host Oneonta (3-1) this week in a non-region game.
