Mitchem apparent winner without runoff

Hinton Mitchem, former two-term state senator, appears to have the Democratic nomination for district nine senate seat without a runoff. Randy Jones’s supporters here were stunned Tuesday night by a hard defeat.

In Blount, Mitchem carried the county with 68% of the vote. District-wide, with incomplete returns from Marshall and DeKalb, Mitchem was leading with 52% of the vote; Will Beard, 25%; Jones, 23%. In Blount, Jones carried 25% to Beard’s 7%.

College Street accidents call for emergency action

Three cars going off the road in a 20-minute period convinced Blountsville Town Council that immediate safety measures must be taken on the curve on College Street.

“I decided to test the curve today in the rain,” reported police chief Dewayne Messer, “and I slid at 10 mph. Speed is not the only cause for the problem. The street is as slick as glass.”

The council determined to have the street superintendent “cut the corner and fix the ditch so the curve can be banked.”

Planning commission approves subdivision modifications

Oneonta Planning Commission on Monday accepted modifications in Heritage Green Estates proposed by developer Bill Towns, provided the changes comply with restrictions, which they appear to do.

…The developer reported all utilities in except the sewer… Between 14,000 and 15,000 feet of the required 20,000 feet of curbing has been poured.
