Gibbons barbecue

The aroma of barbecued chicken must fill the air around the Wayne Gibbons home often. How else could Janna, Sara, and Charles have become such prize-winning barbecue chicken chefs? At the annual 4-H chickenque held at Woodland Park in June, Janna, Charles, and Sara all placed.

Janna won first in the junior division and competed at the district contest held June 25 in Montevallo. Sara won first in the senior division and Charles placed second. Each received prize money.

Sara, who had earlier won the 4-H public speaking contest, chose to compete in that division at district competition. Charles competed in the district chickenque also held June 25.

Children learn charm of books

Through the influence of a lovely lady, Locust Fork children are discovering they can have wings by the opening of a book. Joy Rushing, director of the media center at Locust Fork Baptist Church, is patiently and with finesse introducing the children to the gold, jewels, and spices to be found in books. They are learning to bridge the present to the beginning of time to learn what it was like to live in exciting times of other days, and to become acquainted with the men, women, and children who made those times exciting. This is especially important in an area where there is no public library.

I pay tribute to Joy. Given a name indicative of her personality, she is quiet, unassuming, talented, beautiful, and a joy to know. As director of the media center, Joy is as dedicated and efficient as if she were the curator of the Smithsonian Institution. Joy plays many parts in the life of our community.

Remlap Volunteer Fire Department

At the July 26 meeting of the Remlap Volunteer Fire Department, it was reported that eight scanners had been purchased and placed in the homes of firemen. The department is now in direct communications with the sheriff’s department. Thursday evening the fire department was called to the Coy Head property to put out a woods fire. The men are more than willing to help if they are called upon.
