Moving Blount County Forward community meetings set

One of the first of a series of community meetings to introduce the Moving Blount County Forward tax referendum – and to provide reasons to support it – kicked off at Cleveland High School gym last week. A friendly crowd stunned Probate Judge/Commission Chairman Chris Green right off the bat by offering him a round of applause.

Recovering from surprise quickly, Green thanked them noting, “This is my 12th meeting like this, but my first round of applause!”

Radiothon record falls again

The Blount County Education Foundation’s annual radiothon has shattered its own record…again.

Last Thursday, the radiothon generated $302,983 in pledges and all the money will go back into the classrooms of the Blount County School System.

Oneonta further tweaks its likely budget

Meeting for a third time to project a 2017 city budget, Oneonta City Council members present appeared to support the latest version of the more than $7.8 million proposal. That proposal reduces capital outlay funding to provide a 1-percent pay raise for city employees.

At the prior meeting, city manager/economic development officer Ed Lowe had reported then absent Mayor Ross Norris wished to see the raise or COLA (cost-of-living-adjustment) for employees. The latest proposal funds that now estimated $46,000 expense from the capital account.
