Palisades construction ahead
The Blount County Commission has accepted a bid for construction at Palisades Park. Planned are two new large shelters and an additional restroom with water and sewer lines.
Commission Chairman Frank Green told commissioners March 12 that, although only one bid was received, it was lower than the park board had estimated cost of the proposed construction to be. The bid, at $25,341.85, was submitted by Virgle Hazelrig. Green said he expects Hazelrig will waste no time in beginning work.
Hazelrig built the Amilea Porter Center in Palisades and Green commented favorably on his work. Oneonta council approves raises
Oneonta City Council has adjusted salaries of department heads to reflect responsibilities the officials carry. Action came at a called meeting of Mayor Jack Fendley and council members Donald Elrod, Polly Gargus, Jim Fretwell, and C.E. Elrod. Councilman Clifford Battles was absent.
At its March 5 meeting, the council also hired a recreation director to fill the vacancy created when Bobby Jim (Cotton) Murray resigned. Gargus said she was relaying the nomination of Paul Hazelrig by the park and recreation board by recommending Hazelrig be hired. The council concurred. Murray has accepted a job with Oneonta City Board of Education. Hazelrig has been employed at Wittmeier Ace Hardware for some time. Gargus said he has been active in the city’s recreation program.
Salaries recommended by the mayor and agreed to by the council will raise the pay of the police chief to $18,500, the city clerk to $16,000, and the street superintendent to $14,000. The recreation director will be paid $13,250 annually. All are effective with the pay period that began March 5.
