In an effort to educate and vaccinate Blount Countians, area groups, local businesses, and citizen volunteers came together last Sunday to hold a free COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Nico’s Supermarket #2 located in Oneonta.
The event was organized after Oneonta resident Doug Sharp began to question why a large number of Blount County’s Hispanic community continued to wear masks. He said, “One of the more noticeable things I saw was just how many adults were still wearing masks. In comparison, I rarely see other adults, Black or white, wearing masks any longer. It hit me that they are still very concerned about COVID-19, yet they probably haven’t been vaccinated, at least for the most part.”
Sharp then took the initiative to plan an event that would make the vaccines available to those here in Blount County who had yet to be vaccinated. Sharp reached out to friend and local Alabama Coalition of Immigrant Justice (ACIJ) director Ana Delia Espinosa and Area Healthcare Center (AHEC) coordinator Justin Johnston for help.
Nico’s Supermarket #2 in Oneonta graciously offered their location for the clinic. On Sunday, 63 vaccinations were administered by a team of doctors and resident students from UAB.
“I appreciate all those support groups that were willing to help me organize this vaccination event to get the Hispanic community both better education as well as vaccinated,” Sharp concluded.
Currently, Alabama’s vaccination rate of 34.1 percent is lower than any other state. Blount County is in the bottom third of the state with only 14,774 people (26 percent of the population) fully vaccinated. Over the last seven days, there were 125 new cases of COVID-19 in Blount County representing an 84 percent increase from the prior week. As of yesterday, Blount’s positivity rate had climbed to 42.7 percent.
A second, free community vaccination event for those who received their first dose Sunday, as well as other Blount County residents 12 years old and up, is scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 15, from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., at the Nico’s Supermarket #2 on First Avenue East, Oneonta.
