Frances Selvage Shelton

FRANCES SELVAGE SHELTON, 79, Altoona, passed away Friday, May 3, 2019, in Birmingham. The Rev. George Reynolds officiated services on Sunday, May 5, 2019, at Snead Funeral Home. Mrs. Shelton was laid to rest at Blount Memory Gardens under the direction of Snead Funeral Home.

Mrs. Shelton was born March 8, 1940, in Blountsville, the daughter of Andy and Mary Jewel Selvage. She was a graduate of J.B. Pennington High School and Jacksonville State University. She worked for more than 30 years as a registered nurse and director of nurses. She dedicated her professional life to caring for, serving and helping those who needed it most. Frances was a strong-willed woman who dedicated her resources, her particularly persuasive ways, and never-take-nofor an-answer attitude to empowering young people, especially young women. She played a pivotal role in advocating for the rights of student athletes on the girls’ softball team at West End High School, funding and helping secure official support for an on-campus softball facility. She was a devoted fan and supporter of all West End youth and high school sports. Mrs. Shelton served as a Court Appointed Juvenile Advocate and ensured she was a voice for the protection of vulnerable children in Alabama. Her compassion, tenacity, generosity and spirit of community will live on through her family. She will be greatly missed by all who knew her.

Mrs. Shelton was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Edward Shelton; one granddaughter, Allie Nicole Shelton; and eight brothers and sisters.

She is survived by her husband of 58 years, LaReid Shelton of Altoona; one daughter, Regina Beavers and her husband, Michael, of Altoona; five grandchildren, Shalina Proctor and her husband, Jeremy, of Altoona, Lindsey Shelton of Montgomery, Nic Beavers and his wife, Whitney, of Altoona, Megan Shelton of Altoona, and Scott Beavers and his wife, Allysun, of Altoona; eight great-grandchildren, Connor, Cason, Collin and Corvin Proctor, Braxton, Brylee and Brice Beavers and Fisher Beavers; one sister, Mary Ruth Smith; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers were Lanier Gramling, Chris Pridmore, William Smith, Nic Beavers, Scott Beavers, Connor Proctor, and Cason Proctor. Honorary pallbearers were Braxton Beavers, Brylee Beavers, Collin Proctor, Corvin Proctor, Brice Beavers, and Fisher Beavers.
