The Oneonta Redskins wrapped up the 4A title with a 28-10 victory over Charles Henderson High School earlier this month at Bryant-Denny Stadium.
The members of the Alabama Sports Writers Association (ASWA) took notice and named four Redskins to the ASWA 4A All-State First Team.
On offense, Brock Latta was selected as a receiver and Tyler Short was selected as a kicker. On the other side of the ball, Blake Bean was chosen as a defensive lineman and Ethan Boyd was chosen as a linebacker.
Latta was the Redskins’ second-leading receiver and caught 32 passes for 647 yards (20 yards per reception) and nine touchdowns.
Short hit 87 of 89 extra points and connected on 6 of 8 field goals with a long of 40 yards. His 87 extra points this year broke the state record of 84 set by Ben Riggs of Marion County in 2011. He scored 105 points this season, tied for second-most in state history.
Bean is a two-time all-state selection. The 6’3, 260-lb. lineman finished the year with 103 tackles, 24 for loss, and seven sacks.
Boyd was the leading tackler for the Redskins from his middle linebacker spot. He had 150 tackles, 21 for loss, and five sacks. He also had an interception. In the championship game, he led the Redskins with 11 tackles, including one for loss, and an interception.
Oneonta defensive lineman Thomas Boyd was named as an honorable mention selection.
Two other Blount County players were named honorable mention.
In Class 3A, J.B. Pennington quarterback Brandon Butts and receiver Hunter Etheredge were honorable mention selections.
All of those chosen all-state were seniors, except for Butts, who is a junior.
