The students at right are sixth-graders in Sandy McElvey’s gifted class at Cleveland Elementary School – flanked by a very good friend. From the left: Bryson Browning, Logan Washburn, Pierce Gilliland, Jacob Dutton, Storm Edgil, Breanna Johnson – and Wallace State president Vicki Karolewics. McElvey asked the kids to go along to the Wallace State-Oneonta temporary campus center grand opening to serve as flag-raisers. And they all came away with full tuition scholarships to Wallace State, courtesy of president Karolewics in appreciation for their service and that of Eldridge Bynum, their fellow townsman, now deceased, who labored unceasingly for years on behalf of Wallace State. The surprise gift was greeted with a standing ovation by the delighted crowd, estimated at 400 for the event.‘My students went to this event thinking they might get a free T-shirt. They left with much more than that!’ McElvey said. The Oneonta Center begins its first semester of courses on May 26.
