First annual ‘Whitetail Wonders’ coming to Oneonta

The Lester Memorial United Methodist Church Men’s Group is hosting the first annual ‘Whitetail Wonders’ – a Trophies of Grace event – on Friday, Aug. 12, at the Blount County-Oneonta Agri-Business Center. The doors open at 5 p.m.

The event includes live music, a limited number of free dinners, storytelling, an inspirational testimony from Jim Porter (founder of Trophies of Grace and The Men’s Barn Meeting in Molino, Fla.), and drawings for many door prizes – including a ‘Trophy Hunter’ bolt-action rifle by Savage and other great items for hunting season. Trophies of Grace is providing a large display of beautiful, world-class whitetail deer collected from around the country. Large game trophies will be featured, including record bucks based on the Pope and Young Scoring System.

Admission is free and the event is open to all; however, a complimentary BBQ pork dinner will be offered to 300 attendants. Mike Bolton, The Birmingham News outdoor writer and editor of Alabama Outdoor Magazine, is preparing the dinner. His notable Southern-style cooking has drawn crowds of people to Talladega NASCAR events, regional wild game dinners, SEC football games, and many other church events. They are on a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. You may reserve tickets ahead of time by calling 625-5681. There is a limit of two tickets per person.

Porter says, “Trophies of Grace officially started in 2008 and is a very unique ministry that exists to share God’s great outdoors and the Gospel of Jesus Christ.” The Porter family has traveled across the country during the past 14 years helping churches with programs that appeal to men, women and families interested in hunting and outdoor activities.

Bill Denson, a member of the men’s group at Lester Memorial and one of the coordinators for this event, states, “This is an exciting opportunity for our men’s group. It is a different kind of outreach for our church. It is exciting to have a chance to bring to Oneonta an event that will appeal to such a wide range of people – men, women and children from all walks of life. We are thrilled to have a chance to help share the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It is such an amazing thing to be a part of. We know everyone is going to enjoy this event. We would love everyone to join us – the more, the merrier.”
