Eight candidates – seven Republicans and one Democrat – qualified to run for the Sixth District U. S. House of Representatives seat that went up for grabs when Rep. Spencer Bachus announced last fall he would not seek re-election. The last four of those candidates, taken alphabetically, appear in this edition.
The three Republicans are Gary Palmer, Hoover; Robert Shattuck, Mountain Brook; and Tom Vigneulle, Wilsonville. The lone Democrat is Avery Vise, Maylene. Republicans Scott Beason, Gardendale; Will Brooke, Birmingham; Paul DeMarco, Homewood; and Chad Mathis, Indian Springs Village, were covered last week.
District 6 includes all of Blount County, as well as all of Shelby, Bibb, Chilton, and Coosa Counties. It also includes much of Jefferson County.
Profiles are based on information provided by the candidates themselves, in response to a questionnaire sent to them by The Blount Countian. The opinions expressed, the statistics quoted, and in many cases the specific choice of words used – are their own. So is the choice of photo that accompanies each profile. Some responses were edited for brevity. All “statements to voters” are verbatim.
