Darryl and Martha Murphree Ray found a novel way to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary. Three generations of their family enjoyed a stay at the beach April 1 – April 5. There were 13 of them, and a look at the accompanying photograph is proof “13” isn’t unlucky.
The couple were married April 2, 1960, by the Rev. H.J. Beasley at his home in Oneonta. Son of Willie and Eudelle Bryant Ray, the groom had grown up and gone to school in Susan Moore and Oneonta. He had a long career with Liberty National Life Insurance Co. before retiring. After a term on Oneonta City Council, he is serving as mayor, a role he fills with great enthusiasm. He and his wife are members of Fairview Missionary Baptist Church.
Martha Murphree, daughter of M.C. and Jessie Tidwell Murphree, grew up and attended school in Bessemer and Oneonta. She is an earlier employee of Blount County tax assessor’s office and Blount Office Supply and member of a garden club. She’s now a full-time grandmother and mayor’s wife.
The couple has two sons, Donny B. Ray of Oneonta and Todd Ray of Susan Moore, and a daughter, Anna Wertheim of Homewood. There are five grandchildren in addition to little Angel Carlee.
