Election finale

Blount County continued its long love/hate tradition regarding alcohol sales in the 2014 general election, as two more communities squared off in municipal option referenda, with one – Cleveland – narrowly approving liquor sales, and one – Locust Fork – not so narrowly defeating it.

Citizens in West Blount Volunteer Fire Department’s coverage area voted to create a fire district with mandatory fees, thus assuring improved fire and medical services protection for the county’s largest coverage territory.

In Blount County’s one countywide contested race in the general election, Republican incumbent Loyd Arrington defeated Independent newcomer Ryan Fortenberry by 9084 to 4793 for Blount County Sheriff. Both men commented on the outcome.

“I am humbled and honored to be reelected to serve the people of Blount County, and I’m grateful for their support,” Arrington said. “I’ll continue to work diligently to deserve the confidence they’ve placed in me.”

“It was my first time to run for anything, and I really enjoyed meeting people and talking to people in different areas of the county,” Fortenberry said. “I hope my campaign shed light on things that need to be worked on. If it has that result, then all the people of Blount County are the winners, regardless of who is in office,” he added.
