Alabama made history on Thursday, Oct. 8, when it voted unanimously to include dyslexia into the state board policy for students. This means that all students in Blount County will be screened, identified, and an appropriate curriculum offered as a result of these changes to the administrative code.
I was recently nominated to be a member of the Alabama State Dyslexia Advisory Council to support the code changes and the Alabama State Dyslexia Resource Guide recently posted on the state website.
The Advisory Council will be honored for its work with dyslexia by the Literacy Council of Central Alabama on Thursday, Oct. 22. October was named in the resolution at the board meeting as Dyslexia Awareness Month and we will wear red on Oct. 15.
I will be conducting a parenting workshop on dyslexia awareness at Hayden Primary on Oct. 26 during our parenting day.
