Ten-digit dialing becomes mandatory after Saturday, Oct. 12. In order to accommodate the new 659 area code, you will now need to dial the area code for all local calls. After Oct. 12, if you dial only seven digits, your call will not go through. Current area codes and phone numbers will not change. All services, automatic dialing equipment, or other types of equipment programmed with a seven-digit number will need to be reprogrammed. Examples are life safety systems, business phones, fax machines, Internet dial-up numbers, alarm and security systems, gates, speed dialers, call forwarding settings, voicemail services, etc. You may also want to check your business stationery or advertising materials to ensure the area code is included.
