Described by the cast as “Golden Girls meet Designing Women, with a little bit of Steel Magnolias thrown in,” the Covered Bridge Players upcoming production of “Dixie Swim Club” is sure to make one smile.
“Dixie Swim Club” follows five members of the Pemberton College Swim Team from graduation through age 77. The group meets every summer for a weekend get away in the outer banks of North Carolina.
Having only five cast members, this comedy takes a peek at four of the annual weekends these life-long friends have spent together. It offers lots of humor and one-liners, as well as moments that will pull at one’s heartstrings.
The play portrays the friendships of five women with totally different lifestyles ranging from a perky and ditzy ray of sunshine (Barbara Andersen), to a youth-obsessed man-magnet (Sharon Breaseale), to a wisecracking cynic who excels at everything except romance (Sheree Logan).
Also thrown in the mix are a struggling mother with limited finances and a problematic lifestyle (Donna Miller Blackwell), and the perennial team captain (Betty Gowins), whose hyper-organized tendencies often drive her friends a bit crazy.
