County schools celebrate Earth Day
Hayden Primary School students from the left, Virginia Guthrie, G. C. Guthrie, and Myles Marsh, water a maple tree provided by Schneider Electric and planted near the school on Earth Day, April 20. Blount County Schools partnered with Schneider Electric, energy conservation engineers and consultants, to conduct a conservation event at Hayden Primary and Locust Fork Elementary schools. The tree planting ceremonies were held to symbolize the school system’s commitment to sustaining the Earth through energy conservation.
Schneider Electric was awarded the contract to assist Blount County Schools in implementing a large-scale, energy-saving project to dramatically improve energy efficiency at its 20 facilities. The project is expected to generate $14.6 million in energy and operational savings over the years, in the process reducing the system’s energy budget by 31 percent. It is expected to contribute to removing 6,000 tons of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, the equivalent of removing 1,275 cars from the road or powering 643 homes for one year.
