County Road 39 wreck kills one, injures two

A two-vehicle crash last Wednesday morning killed 62-year-old Billy Joe Harris, of Oneonta, and injured Walter Ray Harris, of Oneonta and Ryan Fells, 18, of Altoona. Both survivors are in critical condition at UAB Hospital in Birmingham, according to the hospital.

Trooper Curtis Summerville of the the Alabama Department of Public Safety said the head-on collision occurred three-and-a-half miles north of Oneonta on County Road 39. The Birmingham News reported Billy Joe was a passenger in a vehicle driven by his brother Walter. The truck was hauling a load of stone, and the stone shifted forward, which could have been the cause of death, stated Blount County Coroner John Mark Vaughn.

A single-vehicle accident occurred later that day on Old Hayden Road, according to Summerville. James Alvis, of Warrior, was airlifted to UAB Hospital. Alvis is now in fair condition, according to the hospital.
