Corner woman found guilty of manslaughter

Elsie Wells Thomas, 35, of Corner, was found guilty of manslaughter following a week-long jury trial, according to Blount County District Attorney Pamela Casey.

In January 2011, Thomas’s ex-husband, Matt Allen, was found dead in his home in the 700 block of Shipp Road in Hayden from a close-range single shotgun blast to the heart. At the scene, Thomas claimed she shot him in self defense, however, forensic evidence and photographs taken at the scene demonstrated that was not the case, Casey said.

Thomas was originally released by the Blount County Sheriff’s Office following the incident, but after an investigation, was indicted for murder in May 2013.

Sentencing is scheduled for Sept. 18 in the Blount County Circuit Court. Judge Steven King allowed Thomas to remain out on bond, over the state’s objection, pending sentencing, Casey said.

“My heart grieves for the family of Matt Allen, who lost their only son,” Casey said.“The jury worked hard, reviewed the evidence, and came to the conclusion that was supported by the testimony.”

She commended the work of Blount County Sheriff’s Investigator Len Chambless for his work on the case.
