Celebrating Coach Bill Hawkins 90th birthday, 64 former football players, 13 former cheerleaders, and a host of baseball players from Oneonta High School’s graduating classes of 1957 to 1967, gathered at Oneonta First Baptist Church June 19, in his honor. With special guests, and other attendees, a total of 105 joined in the celebration.
During the event, Oneonta’s mayor, Ross Norris, presented Hawkins with a key to the city. The mayor’s brother and former player, Lowell Norris, read a proclamation signed by Mayor Norris proclaiming June 19, 2019, as Coach Bill Hawkins Day.
Hawkins, along with his friend, Clariece, entertained the group with song, and the coach shared memories from each graduating class. He was also presented official Redskin gear by Oneonta head coach Phil Phillips, in case he is needed on the sidelines this year.
