Cleveland mayor indicted on ethics charges

On Tuesday, March 30, a Blount County grand jury handed down an indictment for Cleveland Mayor Jerry Jones stemming from an Alabama Ethics Commission investigation last fall.The Commission stated at the time that “based on evidence as presented to the Commission, there exists cause to hold that Jerry Jones violated the Alabama Ethics Law.” The Commission sent the case to the District Attorney’s office for further review and it was presented to the grand jury last week.

The first count of the indictment states, “The Grand Jury of said county charge that, before the finding of this indictment, Jerry Lynn Jones, whose name is to the Grand Jury otherwise unknown, a public official or employee, to-wit: Jerry Lynn Jones, did intentionally use or cause to be used, his official position or office to obtain personal gain, to-wit: bid information, for himself and said use and gain not otherwise authorized by law, in violation of Section 36-25-5(a) of the Code of Alabama, 1975 against the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama.”

Count 2 states, “The Grand Jury of said county charge that, before the finding of this indictment, Jerry Lynn Jones, whose name is to the Grand Jury otherwise unknown, a public official or employee, to-wit: Jerry Lynn Jones, did intentionally use or cause to be used equipment facilities, time, materials, human labor, or other public property under his discretion or control for the private benefit of himself or any other person, or principal campaign committee as defined in Section 17-22A-2, which would materially effect said Jerry Lynn Jones financial interest, in violation of Section 36-25-5(c) of the Alabama Criminal Code, against the peace and dignity of the State of Alabama.”

Jones turned himself in Tuesday. Bail in the case was set at $20,000 by Blount County Circuit Judge Steven King. Also on Tuesday, Judge King recused himself. Arraignment is set for June 23. The Blount Countian will follow up as the story develops.
