Cleveland gets $5000 for new rec field

Cleveland Mayor Jerry Jones (left) accepts a $5000 check from state Rep. Jeremy Oden, to be used to develop a dual-use youth football and soccer field in Cleveland. The field will be located just north of the city sewer plant on county road 1. Jones said excavation and site preparation work on the field will begin soon, with the aim of having the field ready for play by next spring or summer. “We’ve got kids playing football and soccer on baseball fields, and that’s certainly not ideal,” he said. “This will give them a place of their own to practice and play,” he added. Oden said the money is a Community Service Grant from the state’s general fund. Oden represents about a third of Blount County in a slice of territory lying along the northwest border, beginning at the Marshall County line and extending southwards to include both Blountsville and Cleveland. Both men were attending the Blount County Education Foundation radio-thon when the photo was taken. Jones is treasurer of the foundation and Oden is a regular supporter. – Ron Gholson
