Straight Mountain, died Jan. 26, 2014, at UAB Palliative Care Center. Mr. Payne served in the U.S. Army as a heavy machine operator and was a member of the U.S. Army boxing team. He was an avid hunter and played championship checkers. Parents Will and Margie Terrell Payne predeceased him, as did first wife Mary Ellen Glenn Payne, brothers Howard, Hoyt, Klyne and Carl Payne, and sisters Merle Wren, Ruby Nell Blythe, and Joyce Smith.

Surviving are wife Ralphene Payne; sons John Charles ( Janet) Payne, Oneonta, Herbert Kyle (Melonie Ann) Payne, Notasulga, Glen Jeffery (Debbie) Payne, Oneonta; grandchildren April Payne Reeves, Zachery (April) Payne, Nicholas Payne, Willie (Ashley) Payne, Amanda Payne (Stephen) Sides, Honnie Payne (Doug) Arnold, Bo (Brooke) Payne, Cougar (Dina) Payne, Cody Payne; greatgrandchildren Kristin Reeves, Zoe and Charlie Payne, Alexander and Jagger Payne, Luke and Abigael Arnold, McCoy Payne; brothers D.F. (Nell) Payne, Allgood; sister Dot Bradley, Trussville.

John Metzler officiated the 11 a.m. graveside service held Jan. 29 at New Hope Cemetery. Serving as pallbearers were Doug Arnold, Cody Payne, Mickey Short, Dago Atkinson, Zach Payne, and Bo Payne. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the UAB Palliative Care Center, 1720 2nd Avenue South, Birmingham, AL 35249. Lemley Funeral Home directed.
