As we enter the new year, the Blount-Oneonta Chamber of Commerce has started off with a bang. Upcoming events for the first quarter are in place and will start as soon as tomorrow, Jan. 9. You will want to take note of the happenings and make it one of your resolutions to get involved.
Computer basics course
On Jan. 9, a computer basics course will begin at 10 a.m. and run through noon. The six-week course will provide fundamentals of computer usage and includes saving and retrieving files, using an internet browser and search engine, setting up an email account, composing a Word document, the basic use of social media, as well as other valuable skills.
The computer class is limited to 10 people to allow plenty of one-on-one assistance. Thanks to the sponsorship of OTELCO, the class is free and open to the public. To register, call the Chamber at 205-274-2153.
Leadership Blount County
Beginning on Jan. 16, the Leadership Blount County class will offer monthly classes through June. Members of Leadership Blount County will meet every third Thursday. Leadership Blount County is an organization that brings together a class of leaders from a wide diversity of backgrounds through a series of monthly seminars.
The purpose of Leadership Blount County is to prepare and encourage its graduates to engage in greater individual and group action in order to contribute to the betterment of the community and its people. The program is designed to explore the community’s critical issues in education, government, healthcare, race relations, criminal justice, economic development, arts and entertainment, and the quality of life.
MLK Day of Service and Unity Celebration
Co-hosted by the Chamber, Wallace State, the Blount County Children’s Center, Servant Law, Lester Memorial United Methodist Church, and Anchors Church, a day of service and unity celebration will take place on Monday, Jan. 20. Honoring Martin Luther King Jr. Day, a service project will take place at The Arc of Blount County beginning at 8 a.m., so roll up your sleeves and help give The Arc an overhaul.
Continuing to honor King, the unity celebration will be held at The Little Brick Church at noon. It will be followed by a lunch at Lester Memorial United Methodist Church. The lunch is free and open to the public.
The Chamber is working on conducting an after hours event at Legends Sofa Bar on Tuesday, Jan. 21. Stay tuned for details for the fun event.
Rounding out January will be a Chamber lunch on Wednesday, Jan. 22, at noon. The lunch will take place at First Baptist Cleveland.
Blount County Bridal Fair
As we move into February, love is in the air, and to help celebrate, the Chamber will host the Blount County Bridal Fair Sunday, Feb. 23, from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m., at The Little Brick Church in Oneonta. For those planning a wedding, this will be the perfect opportunity to talk with a variety of Blount County wedding vendors at the same time and at the same place. Door prizes will be given away. There is no admission fee to attend.
Just as spring arrives, so does the annual Chamber dinner. It will be held on Tuesday, March 31, at Anchors Church. More details will be given at a later date.
With the 2020 Census coming up on April 1, the Chamber is busy at work to make sure the numbers will be as accurate as possible. The census count will impact everything from school funding to government services for the next 10 years. It is important to capture everybody’s residence in Blount County.
Looking on into the next quarter, the monthly Chamber luncheon will be held Wednesday, April 22, at noon. Other events will be planned.
