The Hayden Wildcats were on the road for the first time in the 2017 season to take on John Carroll Catholic last Friday. The game was played on Pat Sullivan Field, and the host Cavaliers beat the Wildcats 27-12.
Hayden took half of the first quarter driving 77 yards for the score. Senior quarterback Sheridan Miller hit senior running back Cam Nelson for 10 yards and a touchdown. The point-after failed but the Wildcats had a 6-0 lead with 7:56 remaining in the opening quarter.
The Cavaliers answered on a 33-yard pass from Bailey Mara to Malcolm Russell. Jeffrey Buckner’s point-after gave the home team the lead at 7-6 with 6:08 on the first quarter clock. Neither team could muster any points and the first half ended with John Carroll on top 7-6.
John Carroll took only three plays to score to start the second half. Demetrius Battle scored his first of three touchdowns on a 5-yard run. Buckner added the point-after to give the Cavaliers a 14- 6 lead with 10:45 remaining in the third quarter.
John Carroll took a 21-6 lead following a Hayden fumble. Battle ran in from 37 yards and the score with 3:22 remaining in the third.
Hayden cut the lead to 21-12 on an 11-yard run by senior running back Caleb Wilson with 11:11 remaining in the game but Battle added a touchdown run from 9 yards with 6:24 to go to cap the scoring.
The leading rusher for the Wildcats was senior Austin Turner who finished with 80 yards on 12 carries, senior Levi Snider added 72 yards on 12 carries and Wilson had 40 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Leading recievers were senior Cody Snow who had two catches for 46 yards and Nelson, who had 4 catches for 35 yards and a touchdown.
Leading defenders were Snider, who had 12 tackles and two tackles for loss, junior Cade Marlin had 10 tackles, three for loss, and Wilson had six tackles and two pass breakups. Nelson had 6 tackles and a pass breakup and senior Ethan Hallmark had five tackles.
The loss drops Hayden to 0-2, while John Carroll moves to 1-0. Friday night the Wildcats open region play on the road against the West Point Warriors. West Point is 1-1 after beating Hamilton 23-13 in week 0 and losing last week to Wilson at home 42-24. Hayden defeated the Warriors last year 14-6.
