Flavio Guerrero barreled over from a yard out on the final play of the game and the Susan Moore Bulldogs escaped with a huge 27-21 victory at Sardis last Friday night.
On a night where the Bulldogs needed to win to have a chance to host a playoff game, the Bulldogs relied on defense and the running game to hand the Lions their first region loss.
Susan Moore scored first on a 6-yard pass from Justin Hawkins to John Evatt but the Lions took a 14- 6 lead early in the second quarter.
Susan Moore countered with Guerrero’s first touchdown of the night, a 14-yarder midway through the second quarter, and tied the game 14-14 when Hawkins hit Evatt for the two-point conversion.
Susan Moore regained the lead in the third quarter when Guerrero picked up a Hawkins fumble in the Bulldog backfield and bolted 34 yards for the score. Freddie Hernandez added the kick to put the Bulldogs up 21-14 with :32 left in the quarter.
Sardis tied the game after a Bulldog fumble gave the Lions a short field. Quarterback Kyle Garmon scored on a 1-yard run and the extra point made the score 21-21 with 8:38 left to play.
The Bulldog defense took over down the stretch and limited the Lion offense to a pair of meaningless possessions.
Susan Moore finally got moving again and a big run of 31 yards by Evatt moved the Bulldogs deep into Sardis territory. Eventually, the Bulldogs were faced with fourth-and-goal from the Lion 1 with just :02 left to play. After a timeout, Guerrero followed his offensive line into the end zone and the Bulldogs had picked up the biggest win of the season.
Susan Moore pounded out 193 yards on 42 rushes but Hawkins completed just 11 of 30 passes for 88 yards with one touchdown and one interception.
Hawkins had a good night on the ground, leading the team with 68 yards on 15 carries. Evatt had 51 yards on nine carries and led the team with 54 yards receiving on five catches.
Guerrero was a terror. The senior scored every time he touched the ball on offense, finishing with 49 yards and three touchdowns on three carries.
On defense, Guerrero led the Bulldogs with 13 tackles and a pair of fumble recoveries. Carlos Hinojosa had a fumble recovery and a sack, Phillip McEvoy had a fumble recovery, and Cody Self had a pair of sacks.
Josh Holmes added an interception for a Bulldog defense that forced five Sardis turnovers.
Susan Moore improved to 6-2 overall, 5-1 in 3A Region 6. Sardis fell to 6-2 overall, 5-1 in the region.
