After COVID-19 forced the cancellation of the 2020 Tom Bell Memorial Classic, event organizers, as well as the host school, were ready for the 10th Classic to get underway. Hosted by Oneonta High School, the annual tournament was once again held at Limestone Springs. On April 12 and 13, 12 teams teed off to vie for the championship.
For the third year, Mountain Brook High School won the tournament setting a new team and individual record. Mountain Brook scored a 552 (24 under par) and Gordan Sargent shot a 134 (10 under par).
Joining Oneonta and Mountain Brook were Vestavia Hills, Fort Payne, Guntersville, Huntsville, Homewood, Spanish Fort, Spain Park, White Plains, Hartselle, and Hewitt-Trussville.
Kara ‘Reese’ Brewer, a senior at Oneonta High School and member of the OHS girls golf team, was the recipient of the annual Tom Bell Scholarship. She was awarded $2,000 for 2022. Each year she maintains at least a 3.0 GPA, the scholarship will renew. Brewer is also a varsity cheerleader, member of the SGA, and currently taking college courses through Wallace State as she finishes her senior year of high school.
This annual event is run entirely by volunteers and has provided more than $23,000 in college scholarships. HomeTown Bank has been the tournament’s Platinum Sponsor each year. Gold sponsors are The Sanders Family Foundation and Capstone Building Corporation. For more information on how you can help with this annual event, visit their website at www.tombellmemorial.com.
