Joshua Blake Hamby, of Blountsville, was killed in a car crash on County Road 26 last Friday night during pursuit by Blountsville police. Hamby died when his car collided with another vehicle then skidded off the road into a stand of trees.
An unidentified female passenger in Hamby’s car was injured and taken to the hospital. The driver of the other vehicle was not injured.
Hamby had a record of several arrests for various offenses in recent years, including traffic violations, reckless driving, and possession of marijuana.
Blountsville acting police chief Alexis McCollum said Hamby had been stopped at a driver’s license checkpoint, and volunteered to officers that there were warrants out for his arrest. While the officers were checking on the warrants, Hamby drove off. No high-speed chase occurred, although Hamby drove off “giving indications there might be,” McCollum said. The crash had already occurred when officers arrived moments later.
